Had some big winds knock out our internet for a day and a half, so sorry I'm behind responding to a bunch of you! Friday I head off to a men's retreat weekend, and Sunday is a Super Bowl party..so I may fall further behind!
The CCM cute pet contest is over in a few minutes..congrats to Malibu (see below) for wiping out the competition. It was a well deserving winner as it didn't even enter the contest until the 16th, and ended up with 320 votes..well over 20 a day. Mikey came in second with 280 votes, and our beloved Katie finished third with 240. That would be enough votes to win most of the time..so I'm really happy on how you guys supported her! Thank you!! I know i had at least a dozen of you guys voted at least once..but major thanks to Craig, Kyal, and Josh for voting every day! (Did anyone else?) Now let's hope that CCM magazine will still even bother to print the top 3 in the last issue come April. If it does it will be a true collector's item for me. I like third place..second place makes you feel you just missed out.=)

Not much new on the Idol comments..I thought the Miami auditions were much like Omaha, in that they spent more time showing the one's that passed then the freaks and weirdo's. I loved the two friends that sang to Randy and Simon the most. They may be this years Lakisha! The ratings are down this year, even though it's still easily the #1 show, maybe they are trying to show the nicer things. Even Simon has come across as a nice guy lately. I noticed at the end of the show when they had a sneak peek into the next show, that girl Cardin that I featured a few days ago was on. Next week will be the last week for auditions, then it will start to get interesting with Hollywood week and finding out who the top 24 are. My comments have started to slow down..so I think we are all getting tired of auditions and want to move on!
God bless you guys...Jimbo

OK, I got inside info on the early favorite to win this year's Idol..Cardin Lee McKinney. They haven't aired her audition yet, but the buzz is that everyone is raving about her. So I wanted to give you the inside scoop. I won't be rooting for her because I doubt she is a Christian. I see her as a Katharine McPhee type. So here is her myspace site to check out her vocals.http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=45242959
Here is her picture..when you combine her looks and vocals you will see why she is creating a buzz.

Come back after the show tuesday night for more Idol comments! SEEYA!

I've finally got a point system that will make it a fun Super Bowl to watch. Before I get to that..here are the combined regular season and playoff standings going into Super Bowl. See last week's blog for just the playoff standings. If you are a newcomer and just want to see if you can outscore us "experts," feel free!
Chris...65-35
Scott...71-41
Dougie....67-46
Rebel...59-45
Steve...60-50
Jim...58-50
Craig...57-53
Undeserved...45-46
Keith...18-21
Okay, for the Super Bowl I will be a nice guy and only give you points to add to your win total. I won't penalize any wrong picks..we are going on the principle of Grace this final Sunday! Thanks for the good suggestions for some of these idea's!
First point getter: Pick the final score of the game. If you pick New England to win and they do you get one point, if you pick the Giants to win and they do you will get 3 points. From the one's who get the game right, I will then see who came closest to the final score for a bonus 2 points!
Second: Who will score the first points of the game? If you guess a kicker...Gostkowski or Tynes..and are right, you will get a point. Guess another player right and I will give you 3 points. If you guess a defensive player I will give you 5 points if correct.
Third: Pick the game MVP. If you guess Brady, the obvious choice, you get one point. Pick Eli Manning or Randy Moss will get you 2 points if correct. Anybody else will get you 3 points..a defensive player will get you 5 points!
Chris, Dougie, Rebel and Craig all picked the Pats to win the Super Bowl before the playoffs started..so they are eligible for one more bonus point if they do.
I wanted to wait to see if Brady was healthy before doing this, and it likes likes he is. These point getters should keep everyone tuned in to the final gun, even if it's a blowout. I will be watching it at a party, so I won't be doing any live comments during game, probably won't have any comments until Monday night.
Enjoy the game everybody..and thanks for playing!..Jimmy the geek. =)

Here is a good commentary on CCM magazine no longer going to be in print from Christianity today...
This week, I direct your attention to our weekly Scoop news round-up, which leads off with some rather significant news for the Christian music industry. Salem Publishing announced in a press release that the April 2008 issue of CCM Magazine will be its last.
Some of you younger readers raised on the Internet may not see this as a big deal; magazines come and go all the time nowadays. But very few have been around since 1978, which is almost as long as the idea of Contemporary Christian Music itself. CCM truly was the Rolling Stone of the Christian music world, and it reported on the careers of most all your favorite Christian artists.
It helped usher a fledgling industry into the '80s, acquainting us with established favorites such as Larry Norman, Petra, Andraé Crouch, and Randy Stonehill, while introducing us to [then] newcomers like Amy Grant, Sandi Patty, Michael W. Smith, and Steve Taylor.
As we moved into the '90s, CCM championed the industry's new levels of respect and success, thanks to a fresh generation of popular artists like Steven Curtis Chapman, dc Talk, Point of Grace, newsboys, Kirk Franklin, Jars of Clay, Third Day, and Rebecca St. James.
Then the new millennium arrived, which for many reasons, turned the focus back to worship through the efforts of Delirious, Chris Tomlin, MercyMe, and Casting Crowns, to name a few.
Along the way, we cheered when the music of artists like Stryper, Bob Carlisle, Sixpence None the Richer, Stacie Orrico, and Switchfoot caught the attention of the broader culture. We puzzled together over the spiritually fueled lyricism of artists like Bob Dylan, Kansas, U2, Over the Rhine, and Evanescence. And through CCM's sensitive coverage, we mourned as a family over the passing of legends like Keith Green, Mark Heard, Rich Mullins, and Gene Eugene.
I still remember my first issue of CCM during my college years in the early '90s. I've even kept several articles from favorite issues for my personal files. One in particular from November 1995, called "Critical Condition" by Todd Hafer, discussed whether or not there could be critical/negative reviews in Christian music; it ended up playing an important part in shaping the way I approach reviews from a Christian perspective.
All publications go through highs and lows, and CCM was no exception. At its best, the journalistic insight and perspective challenged me to keep a Kingdom perspective (as Charlie Peacock would call it) in this broad genre called "Christian music" that knows no stylistic boundaries. And even when the magazine would shift more to publicity than journalism, it still kept us up to date with the industry's latest happenings, trends, and albums.
I don't mean for this "eulogy" to put the magazine to rest prematurely. CCM still has three issues left—just a few months shy of their 30th anniversary. Then they'll say goodbye to print and turn their focus to the Internet.
Unfortunately, it just won't be the same as in the magazine's heyday. Their absence will be deeply felt. For many of us, CCM was the publication that helped make the genre credible, serving as the entry point into a whole world of music ignored by the majority of publications. And now that the magazine's closing its doors, it begs the question of whether there's a place today for a Christian music magazine in an Internet culture where advertising revenue is growing tighter and tighter.
Yet CCM lives on, and I don't just mean through its website. Many of the writers and editors have moved on to other music and ministry opportunities within the global Christian community, and that could arguably be the magazine's greatest legacy. The magazine may soon be gone, but it will not be quickly forgotten among those who love Contemporary Christian Music.
Back to Jim now..I will miss the magazine so much. Now that myccm is such a big thing in my life, I really looked forward even more to each issue not knowing which of my peeps would be featured this time! I will miss reading about my fave artists in the relaxing confines of the couch or long road trips. I actually don't like to read long articles on the computer..I like quick hitting things, music video's, blogging, correspondence, etc. Will I even continue to subscribe to the magazine online? I'll have to wait and see on that one!
I'm glad the Brain has finally addressed the issue!
Blessings..Jim

This will just be a quick blog compared to the other one's for Wednesday's show in Charleston.
I didn't see any potential winners here, but there was some good stories. 16 year old Amy Flynn might have been a bit quirky, but I was proud that had a strong message of abstinence. Even though Simon made fun of her, she stood strong in her convictions. See video link below!
The brother and sister act of Michelle and Jeffery Lampkin actually had a beautiful version of "I'm Your Angel,", then when they got passed through he shouted "Halleluhah Jesus!" He was a great personality..maybe another velvet Teddy Bear like Ruben. Here is their audition video below. (Sadly the thanks to Jesus part is cut off though)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTdCQxjSjGM What surprised me last night is a couple that were feel good stories that didn't quite sing well enough to make it. New Dad Oliver Highman and Air Force Pilot Lyndsey Goodman. Usually when Idol goes behing the scenes like that, they always get passed through..so I was surprised they didn't.
Here is Amy's audition.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRcFpPmc1hw&feature=related
Here is a good link if you like live blogging and info on the show from USA today.http://blogs.usatoday.com/idolchatter/
OK, that's it until next week! Thanks for all the feedback! Have a blessed day!

Tonight's show from San Diego didn't do a whole lot for me. There was some decent singers, but I didn't detect that any were Christians by the songs they picked out and stuff. The best singer I thought was Michael Johns. The 16 year old boy David Archuleta had a nice tone. The best woman was the one with her sister, who loved Simon..her name was Samantha. That last girl Carly had a terrific voice but those tattoo's were freaking me out! For an hour long show, they wasted way too much time on the guy with the fans. I actually thought the guy who has tried out 11 times had a decent voice..but not quite good enough.
(Before I go on I apoligize for mispelled words..they changed the spellcheck on this blog and it STINKS for ease of use!)
This blog will be dedicated to news and some cool links.
If you guys have never read Chris Sligh's blog, it's a must for Idol lovers! You will get all the background info on what takes place behind the scene's, his recording his new CD, etc. He mentions that the guy last week who had all his fingernail peelings (gross!), he met last year at auditions. His name is Brandon Green, and he is a Christian as well. So that's one guy to pull for if you can get the image of those fingernails out of your head! Here is the link to Sligh's blog.http://frommymindtoyoureyes.blogspot.com/
If you want some good websites with American idol info..the EW one is good. If you go to this link it will lead you to all kinds of good stuff..including an excellent interview with Melinda Doolittle. There is a video from that girl Carly with the tatoo's from 2002 that's a bit scary. Also have a power ranking from the first week..where Kristy Lee Cook is the fave so far. They showed last year's poll at this time, and Jordin and Blake were afterthoughts to Sanjaya! here is that link.http://www.ew.com/ew/package/0,,20007164,00.html
Speaking of Kristy Lee Cook, she gave hope to a lot of Christians with her "Amazing Grace" audition last week. Here is her website from putting out an album a few years ago. I wasn't too happy with the video at all, going around with a guy without his shirt on, but after watching it closely I think they have rings on, and he is being sent off to war, which also makes me think the "character"in the video is her husband, so it's not QUITE so bad I suppose. She definately isn't some naive farm girl who just rolled off the farm hoping to get her voice heard for the first time though. I still prefer contestants who have no previous dealings in the music industry. here is Kristy's link.http://www.kristylee.net/kristy_biography.htm
Those of you who haven't heard Phil Stacey's country single...here it is...not too bad!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBYxfN2CRQg&feature=related
Well, I guess that's enough for tonight. On Wednesday's show I hear Chris Sligh's brother will be making it through. I go to Church so my thoughts on Wednesday's show will always be later in week after I have time to see the show.
Thanks for reading..and as usual, I love your feedback on the show!..Jimbo

Ended up being two terrific games today..though neither team I wanted won. I actually thought it was a bad break when the Packers won the coin flip..I told my wife that Farve was either gonna hit a bomb or throw a pick..unfortunately it was the latter. Sorry Scott. I hate seeing a goat in these games, so I was at least happy that kicker will now have a life, not a Norwood hide in a cave life.
The Patriots could have been had today. If it would have been the Colts they played we might have had an all Manning Super Bowl. If L.T. could have played for the Chargers some of those red zone field goals might have been touchdowns. I think The Giants match up well with the Pats, and we might see a much better game than the 13 point early spread predicts.
On to the contest..everyone had the Packers and lost 3 points, so it was a bad week for everyone. Also, the bonus points for Super Bowl predictions didn't generate any points on the NFC side, as no one picked the Giants. six people have the Pats in the Super Bowl, so I will give you the one bonus point now, and the 4 who have them to win the Super Bowl will get the other point if they win.(Craig, Doug, Rebel and Chris.) 5 had the Pack in the Super Bowl, which would have been a big 4 point bonus. So here are the playoff standings:
Chris...11-4 overall..........1-3 on games Sunday..one bonus point.
Scott...10-5.........1-3....one bonus
Dougie....10-5......1-3...one bonus
Rebel......10-5........1-3...one bonus
Craig........7-7....1-3...one bonus
Steve........6-8...1-3
Jim............5-8...1-3
Keith.........5-9....0-4
Undeserved...4-10.....0-4......one bonus point.
I will combine the regular season and playoffs maybe before the Super Bowl, maybe not. Basically Chris is still just a bit ahead of Scott, who needed his Packers to win the Super Bowl for huge bonus points.
I am not going to have the Super Bowl points posted until next Monday. I'm trying to think of maybe an additional prediction like who can predict final score the closest for 2 points, just to make it more interesting. So come back next Monday and make your picks for the Super Bowl there.
Thanks to everyone for playing all year..it's been a blast. Hopefully next year we can make it bigger and better!
Have a great week everyone..and don't forget to vote for Katie in the pet contest! It's coming down to the stretch..and her picture would appear in the final CCM issue ever if she hangs on to top 3. See my blog for the contest for details.

Finally got around to watching the Dallas auditions. I have to say I'm happy with this round of auditions. I was saying I missed having a country singer in last years top 12, and this year there are plenty of good ones to choose from. In addition to Kristy Lee Cook from tuesday (more on HER later), this show had 4 hopefuls.
First there was Jessica Brown, a former drug abuser who said the song "Jesus, Take The Wheel" helped turn her life back to God. What was a saying in my last blog?! If that song touched one person it makes Idol worth it..there's proof! Anyway, she did a great version of "I'll Stand By You." I think more of Carrie's version than the Pretenders now. here is a link to that audition.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBpBSett-zE
There was 16 year old Alaina Whitaker..she has the whole country package going..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IHQ1yTjVhw
The best of the bunch was Kady Malloy..who did a dead on Britney Spears imitation before her own song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29qjbOXDwMs
Also liked this country farm kid named Drew. No video on him yet..until I learn his last name.
There was also a girl who recovered from a car crash named Kayla.who I am partial to because that's my daughter's name..and my other girl is Kristi, which leads me to..
Back to Kristy Lee Cook..she had a CD a few years back..which sparked a debate on whether people with CD's in the past should be on this show..this is also a good website for info on Idol!
http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2008/01/idol-season-7s.html
I will have another whole blog about her shortly..that's another whole topic!
One other unfinished business..my peep Rockit informed me that the song that Melanie sang Tuesday was "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield. She is a Christian and the song IS played on my Christian station..but it is also a pop hit, so Melanie probably didn't do that song because it's a "Christian" song.
That should wrap things up for now..let me know who you have liked so far..Jim

OK, Season 7 of American Idol starts tonight. There is more of a buzz this year than last, since the writers are on strike, a lot of people might be watching that might not have before. Here is a glance of my history with the show.
I didn't watch it much the first 3 years. As someone who mainly only listened to Christian music, I didn't think it would interest me. I watched the finals of year one, just to see what the buzz was about Kelly and Justin. I watched the reruns last year and have to say I was impressed with Tamyra Gray..who would later star in the movie "The Gospel." Year two struck me a little more interesting..I loved Clay and Ruben and watched when I could, but I didn't make it a priority. Ruben has a gospel CD and Clay has a Christian book out. Season 3 I didn't care for Fantasia too much... to me was like listening to someone scratch a chalkboard..so I skipped most of that year. I did miss out on some talent..Jennifer Hudson and George Huff, who put out a Christian album.
Season 4 was when I got hooked. My wife was working her one night a week, so I started watching. Like the rest of America..I fell in love with Carrie Underwood..the classic girl next door who comes out of nowhere. She is what the show should be about. Nowadays it seems like most contestants already have cut tracks or whole CD's, have worked in the music business, or something. I also loved Bo Bice..and when he got a huge cross tattoo put on his chest I thought it was so cool. He was the first that I did some investigating on, and found out about his newfound Christianity. Some things about his drug use in the past came out though, but I was proud he came and did the song "Heaven" right after that. It was a Los Lobo's song..but it was a big hit for Salvador at the time Bo sang it. That year also featured Christians Anwar Robinson and Nadia Turner, who was in a Christian rock group. She even did an awesome Ashley Cleveland song. I also liked Vonzell Solomon because she was a mailwoman.
It was a great year..I actually kind of rooted just a bit more for Bo to win..but looking back now, I'm so glad Carrie won. When her first single was "Jesus, Take The Wheel", it made the whole show worth it in my opinion. Her album ended up selling over 5 million copies. and even though every song wasn't perfect, if just one person came to know Jesus from that song it was worth it.
Late note..I just discovered Bo Bice did an independent CD called "See The Light", lots of Gospel blues type of stuff on it! His link to check out his music is:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=13000490
Season 5 featured another great diverse cast, but ended up with 2 contestants having inpact on Christian music. Of course there was Mandisa..who came out and forgave Simon for calling her heavy because that's what Jesus would want her to do. She was awesome on the show, including a showstopper version of Mary Mary's "Shackles" She didn't last as long as she should have, but her exposure landed her a Christian contract, and she is doing wonderful, appearing on TobyMac's CD as well. The other was Chris Daughtry. He used to lead praise and worship with his band, so I knew he was a Christian. Though he wasn't outspoken like Mandisa, his solid value's came through. Of course the rest is history..he only came in 4th, but had a HUGE selling album of around 3 million copies, had tons of songs dealing with Christian outlooks on life, and his smash hit "Home" found it's way in the Christian top 10 for weeks. He thanks his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in his liner notes. Ironically, the top 2, Taylor and Katharine, have had duds for CD's and got dropped from their contracts this month.
Last year featured the most outwardly Christian top 12 to date. Jordin had GMA roots and worked with Michael W. Smith. Melinda toured with CeCe Winans and others. Phil Stacey and Chris Sligh were worship leaders in their churches, Chris did songs by DC Talk and MuteMath before a too early exit, but he has landed a Christian record contract. I think he's gonna be huge in Christian radio in 2008..check out some of his songs on this link.
http://www.myspace.com/chrissligh
Of course Jordin won and her music is being marketed in the pop and Christian marketplace. Melinda did some wonderful stuff on the show like "There Will Come a Day." I can't wait to see what the future holds for her. Phil has a country album coming out.
So who will emerge in 2008? After seeing the first auditions, I already have some hopefuls! There is Kristy Lee Cook..a down to earth gal who raises horses in Oregon, and sang "Amazing Grace." I also like her because my daughter is named Kristi. There's Melanie Nyema..who sang backup for Taylor Hicks. (She did a Christian hit song but I can't think of who does it..let me know if you know it!) The last girl Brooke White seems like she might be a Christian, doesn't drink or go to R-rated movies ever..cool country voice too. I also have a local interest as a 17 year old girl from Rochester, Alyssa Coco, got the ticket to hollywood..though they didn't show her. There was also a 17 year old boy who did country. I think what was missing last year was a country artist..and a male Carrie Underwood type would be awesome.
Now for my dislikes about the show. I hate it when they feature these weird, foul mouth people for like 5 minutes in auditions instead of showing more good contestants, or showing more of the heartwarming stories of people who didn't make it. I can't have my kids watch auditions live because of it. I have to go through and just show them good one's later. Because of this I will get sick of auditions in about 3 shows, and will look forward to Hollywood week!
Let me know your thoughts on the show's history! In the coming weeks and month's I will be blogging about the show, and when it gets to top 12 I will be doing my annual contest. last year I had 8 people, and already met a ton more Idol fans like Vita, Talia, Addie, Kadi, Josh, Kaytie and others to add for this year. The contest is to predict the top 5..then weekly you get to choose who you think will be voted off! Fun stuff!

Well, the 2 games on Sunday were both great games, full of back and forth drama, with the underdogs pulling off the upsets. I'm not happy about it though. As a guy with no teams to root for, I was just looking forward to all year was 2 epic battles for the right to go to the Super Bowl..Packers-Cowboys and Colts-Pats. To me that would have been a better Sunday than Super Bowl Sunday, which is too much hype and the game usually is a letdown.
So what happens in Dallas now? Does Wade Phillips get fired like he did in Buffalo for being a playoff disappointment? Does Tony get married to Jessica "Yoko" Simpson? Do the Dallas fans throw tomatoes at Jessica first? I don't put the blame on Tony. Special teams and the defense for letting them get the late drive in first half cost them the game.
What about Indy? Does the classy Tony Dungy retire to spend time with his Christian charities and family?
I see a trend..the Chargers were supposed to go to Super Bowl last year..just like the Colts and Steelers won Super Bowls the year AFTER they were supposed to. How could they have won that game without Rivers and LT? They will need them both to give the Pats a run.
The happiest people are Packer fans..now they can flock to their home field to see Farve return to the big dance. Maybe he will have what Elway did to him and pull off upset over heavy fave Pats..but I'm getting way ahead of myself.
I have to give the peeps credit for the Giant "upset", six out of nine called it, so even though no one had the Chargers, most of you had winning records. The playoffs standings are following the regular season..with Chris, Scott and Dougie still the top 3, and Rebel doing great too. The regular season bottom dwellers like myself are stinking it up in the playoffs too!
Here are the standings for playoffs:

Scott..8-2...4-1
Doug 8-2...4-1
Rebel 8-2...4-1

For this weeks games I will do it this way:
San Diego at New England. Pick San Diego and get 4 points if they win..one if they lose. Pick New England and get one point if they win, and 3 points if you lose.
New York at Green Bay. Pick New York and I will give you 3 points if they win, 2 points if they lose. Pick The Packers and I will give you 2 points to win and 3 if they lose.
I think that will make the games more split down the middle!
Have fun and thanks!

Some interesting games this weekend, other than the Giants snoozer over the Bucs. I thought the Redskins would complete the comeback, but after missing that chip shot field goal, the wind came out of their sails. Titans gave the Chargers much more than they bargained for too.
Of course the game of the week was the Jags-Steelers. That was our two point game and it lived up to the hype. The Steelers blew it in my opinion when they got the ball back with the lead with about 3 minutes left and just ran it up the middle. Until then they couldn't be stopped passing all the second half. They could have won the game with a first down, but punted it back with time for the Jags to march down for the winning field goal. I was nervous on winning kick because the holder, Adam Podlesh, is from Rochester. I was hoping he wouldn't drop it like Tony Romo last year. Props to Ben Roethlisberger for waiting around to offer congrats to David Garrard after his TV interview..very classy.
Our regular season champ, Chris, kept up his hot picking by going 5-0. Craig, Doug, Scott and Rebel all went 4-1. I went 3-2. Keith and Steve went 2-3 and Undeserved went 1-4.
This week I think the home teams all have a pretty good advantage. I don't think any of the games are close enough to be a two point game, so what I'm going to do is if you pick a road team to win and they do I will give you a bonus point. I won't penalize you if you pick a home team and they lose. So if you want to take a chance to go 8-0, pick all road teams and pray for miracles. The worst you can go this week is 0-4.
Here are the games:
Seattle at Green Bay.
New York at Dallas.
Jacksonville at New England.
San Diego at Indy.
I'm thinking the home teams will all be at least 7 point favorite's, bit I won't be shocked if any of the road teams do pull off an upset. Even Jacksonville I think matches up well with the Pats if the weather turns cold and windy. I would have made the Colts game the 2 pointer if the Chargers great tight end Gates didn't get hurt.
Have a great week everyone, and if you have a minute vote for my cat in the CCM cute pet contest! See my blog below for the details and link.

Here is Katie with the picture of Fatty..her fave because she is also a fatty! Which cover did you get?
I never realized until I read that article that the guys in Family Force 5 are the Old's brothers. I just got the CD 2 weeks ago and didn't really follow the band too closely. Anyway, I seen their dad Jerome Olds in concert way back in 1990, They sure didn't take off after their dad in musical style!
Remember to keep voting for Katie in the cute pet contest at:
