"For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." - John 1:17 (ESV)

I know that may seem a weird verse to mention on Christmas Eve but I think it encapsulates everything about Jesus at this time.  His birth brought to us grace and truth so that we no longer had to live under the mantle of the law given to Moses.  A law that to which we could NEVER measure up.  It was a law that pointed us to Jesus because He was the only one who could fulfill all the law. 

So today, tomorrow and for the rest of your life focus on the fact that on the day our Savior was born grace and truth came to us.  Embrace it.

I love Proverbs.  There is so much wisdom in that one book that you could likely do a two year long series on Sunday mornings about it with a few Wednesdays thrown in.  Look at this verse:

"Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses." - Proverbs 10:12 (ESV)

Ask yourself honestly...if you find strife in your life right now is it because you haven't been showing love?

"Get thee behind me Satan!"

Did you know that not only was that the phrase Jesus used in Mark 8:33 to rebuke Peter but it's also the rallying cry of the modern day Pharisee?  The people who want to impose their rules upon other people and pass judgment?  The ones that want to rebuke others into accountability with their version of the law while running away from anyone who dares to point out where they are not in line with Scriptures?

Unforunately, we're in a society where the modern-day pharisee has ample opportunity to smear and attack the people they disagree with using a few scriptures and a lot of gossip.  

"Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not. " - 1 Timothy 5:13 (ESV)

Gossips and busybodies...saying what they should not.  Wow.  Stop and think about people around you who want to know all the inside dirt on people when they really have no business knowing it.  How often they're so aggressive to get this information from you!  Then once they obtain that information they proceed to come after that person as if they know first hand what it is you've told them about the person.  No, they can't prove it but they sure have the gossip and the righteous condemnation to throw at them!

"
He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous are both alike an abomination to the Lord." - Proverbs 17:15 (ESV)

Many of these modern day Pharisees fall under that proverb.  Who are the wicked they justify?  Themselves.  They condemn righteous people out of a desire to make themselves look more holy and virtuous as if they alone have a direct pipeline to God and God's truth.  When they face people who hold them accountable for their use of gossip or slander, the response is a self justification and a refusal to listen to Scripture or teachings.

"
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice." - Proverbs 12:15 (ESV)

I hate to brand a group of people with a name like "fools" but the proverbs speaks it ever so clearly.  In the eyes of the world, these people will be seen as hateful, intolerant bullies who end up driving people further away from the love of Jesus Christ they claim to know so well.  Christians will look at them and see how they're violating Scripture in their gossip and slander but when they approach these people in love to show them what they're doing is not in line with God's Word you're met with...

"Get thee behind me, Satan!"

Can you see the arrogance in such an action?  To believe that someone holding you accountable to Scripture...God's Word...is the same as Jesus speaking of his death and the disciples saying that would never happen to him?   Basically saying you're just like Jesus himself? 

"
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" - Romans 3:23 (ESV)

To be sure, Satan will attack you and many times it can come through other Christians who are not living the life or walking in truth.  However, just as many times the people being used against the will of God are those who believe themselves to be completely in God's will while gossiping, slandering, lying, deceiving and having false motives to their actions.  The ones who refuse to accept the truth that if you bear witness to some event and castigate another believer because of it without being there yourself to see it that it's gossip...which is a sin.  God cannot honor someone who is openly and willfully sinning because God cannot associate with sin.  God would not tell you to use sinful purposes to serve his ends.

What do you do when you face these modern day Pharisees?  First, ask them why they feel their actions are justified.  Then point out to them where that does not line up with the Word of God.  If they refuse to listen or begin to attack upon you then just walk away from them.  Clearly state why they are wrong and how they are in sin with what they're doing in their public condemnations, rantings and statements first but then let them go.

Why walk away?

"
A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion." - Proverbs 18:12 (ESV)

"
Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the good sense of your words." - Proverbs 23:9 (ESV)

Once you ascertain that this person is not interested in listening to anything but their own voice, do not speak in their hearing (in other words, to them.)  Why not speak to them?

Trust in the Holy Spirit to guide you when faced with these modern day Pharisees.  He will lead you into all truth regardless of the distortions of the truth that you will have thrown at you from the people more interested in their own voice and self justification than the truth of the Word of God.

I have had e-mails (including one yesterday) with a theme that I have faced many times so I thought it might be a little more universal than I first thought.  Here's part of the e-mail  I received:

"There's a singer I really like who was a Christian singer and now they don't call themselves a Christian singer.  I want to support them and tell my friends about them but how can I do that if they say they're not a Christian singer anymore?"

I know many Christians want to play the "if they're ashamed to say it" card but I tend to look at it in a different way because of this verse:

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for wholeness and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." - Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV)

God has plans for each one of us that in reality we don't know ourselves.  We have no idea what God is going to do with us and through us five, ten, twenty years down the line.  He may call us home tomorrow.  We just don't know what His plan is for us.  How, then, can we say we know the plan he has for someone he's gifted to be a performer?

I understand the confusion because you're often told to listen to Christian music and watch Christian movies and read Christian books as if God is prohibited from working through people who don't run around with "I'm Christian" tattooed on their foreheads.   Truly, there is a lot to say for Christian entertainment but that doesn't mean you're to completely shut off the world. 

You can't be salt and light in the world if you aren't in the world.

Some artists feel it's their call to do that.  They want to bring their art to the world and in many cases bring a message of Christian love and ideals without feeling the need to keep saying "Jesus" every other line.  If that's the plan that God has for them then who are we to stand in the way of it? 

Now, that doesn't mean we don't pray and try to discern if their music is right for us to listen to or to recommend to other people.  If you feel uneasy about it then send an e-mail or MySpace message to the artist.   Just tell them you're a Christian and you want to recommend them to other Christians but if they don't want to be known as a Christian artist to let you know that and you will respect that.  Some will respond and many won't.   If they don't then you likely have your answer.

I know there are some artists I'd like to promote on my page and in this blog as Christian artists who are shunning the label because they want to make an impact in parts of the world that would never listen to them if they essentially walked up and said "I'm a Christian, listen to my CD."  Out of respect for them, I don't promote them here as a Christian artist and I don't recommend them to other Christians as a Christian artist.  I may suggest them to someone who is not a Christian knowing the messages that come through their songs but that's an entirely different scenario than someone looking for an openly Christian artist with songs that are openly about Christianity.

So to answer the question you really have to make up your own mind.  Just know that you likely don't know why they're doing what they're doing and that it's very possible God is leading them in that direction.  If you're concerned, ask them.  Then you can move forward based on that information and what you prayerfully feel God leading you to do.

This is a quickie in response to someone who e-mailed me to say that I'm wrong when I say we are to confront another believer who is trapped in habitual sin:

"My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins." - James 5:19-20 (ESV)

There is no way for someone to bring back a person who has wandered from the truth without confronting them on some level about their sins.  Remember confronting doesn't mean you get in their face and tell them they're on a path to hell or that they're ruining their lives (although it MAY depending on the person and the relationship you have with them.) 

And to the person who e-mailed....you're right that our living the life is a great way to help point people in the right direction.  It's vital to help bring someone back.  However, if you never tell someone they're on the wrong road they might not realize it.  You have to do both.

There's a verse in the passage about God loving a cheerful giver that I don't often hear highlighted in sermons related to giving:

"You will be enriched in every way for all your generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God." - 2 Corinthians 9:11 (ESV)

Now, I usually don't share stories and say "this happened to me" but I had to share one that did because of the blessing God provided to me through it.  It's a perfect example of God enriching someone in ways that go far beyond money. 

Last month it was about ten days from payday when I received a friend request on MySpace from Sandy Stiles of "Set Them Free Ministries."  It's a ministry based in Texas that goes into jails to present the truth of God and confidence of walking in freedom that the truth of God provides to us all.  It's a great ministry and if you have a chance to read Sandy's incredible testimony then you'll probably want to support them as well!

I had decided that I was going to send some money to them when my next paycheck arrived in a little under two weeks.  It was then that God spoke to me.

"Send her a hundred bucks today and that will be the tithe from your next check."


I didn't have a hundred bucks on me to send without running to my savings account and pulling it out.  Yet, because I knew it was God, I did it.  Sandy had sent me a message saying she was not sure if she should accept donations from outside sources but that God confirmed her decision to make the option available when I gave to her.

I thought that would be the end of it.  If it had been, it would have been enough because I was blessed to know that God had used me to confirm something in Sandy's life.  That, however, was just the beginning.  Sandy shared this with me:

"I was in the hotel - it was Tuesday night when I checked the mnistry account online to make sure i was okay for the rest of the week. I knew I was close - we had twice as many girls as expected to do the study there!

Anyway, After paying for the room, there was only 90 dollars left in the account. Everything else that had to be done that week - you paid for! The certificates the girls got, they cost more than they should - You were more than part of that! Those certificated mean more to those girls than anyone could imagine - some have never finished anything before - the yare so proud of them!

I dont usually share this with people but I just want you to be encouraged. My family has taken huge hits this year and we are truly struggling - I didnt have enough money to get home after my trip - God provided that through you. I knew I was close but I went in faith that God would provide and He did. My gas tank was empty - you filled it for me to get there and back! Thank you - the girls and I had a great week with the Lord because of your help."

Isn't that incredible?  I can't describe the blessing I received when I saw that message from Sandy.  Had I not listened to God and waited until I had my paycheck I wouldn't have been the vessel used by God to bless to many other people.   I love when God pulls aside the curtain a little bit to let me see the fruit of my obedience.

So if you do something that you feel God prompting you to do and don't see any immediate response from it, don't fret.  Enjoy the feeling of obedience and the enrichment that comes from obedience to God.  As the Scripture says, you will be enriched in all ways and that means sometimes God will pull the curtain aside for you as he did for me.

There is a situation on MySpace where someone felt like they had to "out" a fellow Christian who is involved with ministry.  They drug up the details of their personal life and posted it with enough details that even without a name being attached to it anyone who supports ministries like the one being discussed knew to whom the person was referring with their comments.  The kicker?  This person had not spoken directly to this person at all about their concerns regarding their walk and their ministry.  They ran to the internet and posted it for all to see.

"If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brotherBut if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses.  If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector." - Matthew 18:15-17 (ESV)

If you have an issue with someone it's not your place to run straight to the internet with suspicions based on things you may have seen written by someone else or overheard from someone else.  There's a reason the Bible speaks clearly against gossip!

If you hear something where you believe someone is not walking in the light then you are to go to THEM.  Don't run to MySpace and post blogs with insinuations.  Don't call around to other ministries and ask them if they've heard what this person has done.  If your heart is right...and that would be with genuine concern for someone to repent of what you've heard...then you would want to talk to them first before doing anything that would bring harm and scorn upon them.

Fight the temptations to run and scream to the world what you think you know.  Realize that you may not know what you think you know...or that someone wants you only to see one side of things to make someone who is out winning souls for Christ look very bad.  Who would want to do that?

I want to encourage you to please prayerfully consider any situation where you feel you have to confront someone about something you think they're doing.  Just remember that you need to go to that person first and not after you've "outed" them to the world.

I had someone I know recently make a post saying that tithing is not scriptural in the New Testament.  He went on to talk about why you shouldn't give ten percent to the church and quoted scriptures to make that point.  Personally, it sounded like someone wanted to keep more in his pocket and was making excuses but I decided to give a deeper look and discovered he was right in a sense but not seeing the big picture.

God doesn't deserve our ten percent.  He deserves it all.  Why?  It's all His anyway...

"The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof,the world and those who dwell therein" - Psalm 24:1 (ESV)

"
For the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.” - 1 Corinthians 10:26 (ESV)

Written by King David in the Old Testament and quoted by Paul in the New Testament.  Everything in the world...you, me, our "stuff", our money...belongs to God.  It's not just ten percent of it.

So don't restrict yourself to ten percent going to God.  Pray, listen to the Holy Spirit and give where He tells you to give.  If you are faithful in your giving when He tells you to do it you'll find that He will supply your needs.

I've always loved something about Kevin Max.  No matter what seemed to be going on around him he always seemed to go his own way.  His music, his passions, his mission always seemed to be on the beat of a different drummer even during his days with DC Talk. 

One of the things about Kevin is blunt honesty.  It comes through on his song "Just An Illusion":

Loving the good life won't produce your heaven on earth
The fatal seduction?
The assumption you can live without God in your life.

I love it when it's said that plainly. 

I could write a giant blog entry here but Kevin says it so well in that song.  This verse says it well too:

"Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life." - 1 John 5:12 (ESV)

I love to listen and support local bands.   Many times I'll find a band that may never reach the pinnacle of the music business but they write a song that is just brilliant.  One of those bands is one from Springfield, Missouri named One Star Story.  They're a pop-rock outfit with a killer drummer, solid guitarists and a vivacious lead singer.  They just landed a record deal and have the goods to make it.  I hope they do.

They're not an overly Christian band but rather a band made up of Christians.  (I personally am not a fan of the "Christian band" label because if we're living our faith we don't need labels, but I digress...)  They look at life from a Christian perspective and write songs that reach people where they are in their lives.  Even if someone doesn't know the Scriptures they can relate to the messages in the songs and when they get to know the band better they can see the One from whom they are inspired to write and sing.

One of those songs is their biggest hit to date, "Near To Far."  I'm sure that different people hear different things in the song but when I hear the chorus I always think of Jesus standing there waiting for us to turn to Him at any time in our lives like a friend that's been waiting for us to call.  Check out the lyrics:

"Here we are, I'm oh so close,
Can't you see you're not too far away?
Just a little bit closer, a little bit closer,
There's so much to say."

Can you picture it?  Think of a time that you faced a struggle in your life or a trying circumstance where you felt like Jesus was a million miles away.  Yet in reality He is there just like in this song...so close to you and just wanting for you move closer and closer to Him.  He has so much to tell you in how to live your life to the fullest and be a blessing to Him, to yourself, to your friends and to the world. 

Yet you have to turn to Him and move closer to Him.  Like Vanessa sings so well on this song you're not too far away no matter what you're doing in life.  It doesn't matter if you're doing drugs or drinking too much or sleeping around or cheating or lying or stealing or anything!  He's SO close!

"for He has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”" - Hebrews 13:5 (ESV)

Stop running and turning away.  Jesus has a lot to tell you if you just move a little bit closer.

Being an 80s/90s geek, I had a real thing for Nirvana.  After Kurt Cobain decided to check out, drummer Dave Grohl went his own way and eventually recorded some demos and released them under the band name "Foo Fighters."

All these years later, I have to say I like Foo Fighters more than I like Nirvana.  Just goes to show that sometimes out of what you think are really bad tragic circumstances something great can rise.

Foo Fighters recently put out a new CD and the lead single was "The Pretender."  (There's a great video for it if you have a chance to find it on YouTube.)  It's classic Foo...great guitar hooks and lyrics that make you sing right along.  The chorus makes you turn up the speakers and scream very loudly...

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays
You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?

I was screaming along with Dave Grohl when I had a very interesting thought about who is the real pretender.  Satan is the master of pretend.  He tries to make you think that the things he offers is better than what God can offer but in reality he's just making you pretend that what he offers you is better.

And what happens if we never surrender to him?  What if we get so bold as to get right in Satan's face and scream as loud as Dave Grohl that we will never surrender to him?  That's he's the pretender?  That we're not like the others that buy what he's selling and settle for less than what God offers?

"Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." - James 1:16-17 (ESV)

Time to yell in the pretender's face that you are never going to surrender.

I was out for my morning walk and listening to music on my MP3 player when God spoke to me through a Smalltown Poets song and told me to come back and write another blog entry for today with the small tidbit of truth that came through to me.  So when the Big Guy tells you to do it, you do it!

The passage comes from the song "Hold It Up To The Light":

Now as soon as I'm moving & my choice is good
This way comes through right where I prayed that it would
If I keep my eyes open and look where I should
Somehow all of the signs are in sight
If I hold up the light

Now, I bolded the middle part because that's where God said "look at that."  Then the thoughts began to flood and while I can't get them all down here I have the general theme of it.

How often do we pray for God to do something and then we just go back to our lives and expect God to bring things to us on a silver platter?  We just wait for the spiritual UPS man to show up in the Holy Brown Truck and bring us a blessing in a box with a "Heaven" return address.  True, God does that on rare occassions...but it's not likely to happen most times!

God opens doors and opportunities all around us all the time if we stop and look for it.  If you're praying to be able to reach out to help the poor...do you drive past the local homeless shelter on the way to the mall and never stop to see if they need volunteers?  If you're praying to be financially in a place to help support a ministry...are you spending hundreds a month on fast food when you could make a meal at home and have an extra hundred bucks that could go to a worthy ministry?

Keep your eyes open.  You never know where and when that answer from God will arrive.

Do you have things in your life that you can't let go of no matter how hard you try to do it?  I think all of us have those things which live in our memories which we don't want to give up because it reminds of us of something great or something that brings us comfort.  Instead of leaning on God and running toward Him we stay somewhere that we shouldn't be staying.

Jill Parr sang in her song "County Line":

"Time to say goodbye
I think I'd better run away
Running out of reasons to stay
Time to hitch a ride
Heading for the county line
It's time to say goodbye"

What is it that you need to look at and say goodbye?  What do you need to leave behind and run to God?

Time to run away, my friends.  The county line is close and it's time to say goodbye.  Trust me...if you run from that and run to God you won't regret it.

We return to song lyric week with a song from a guy named Eli.  Eli has lived quite the life from living under an overpass in Los Angeles to having the number one song on the Christian music charts.  Through it all, he's faced trials from a divorce to other personal issues that it's not my place to reveal.  (He also pulled one of the best practical jokes I've ever seen in my life.) 

The hallmark of his songs is a simple, straightforward honesty in lyrics.  Take, for example, "The Hypocrite Song":

I thank the Lord that there's a Heaven
Full of hypocrites like me
So tell the angels to get ready
Cuz it may not be too long
Until I come and sing my hypocrite song

When is the last time you or a Christian you know embraced your hypocrisy?  I've come to enjoy wrapping myself within it over the years because it's a part of developing that honesty with God and others that brings a joy in transparency.  We all make mistakes.  We all sin.  We all do things that fall short of the glory of God yet instead of telling someone "yeah, I did that" we try to cover ourselves just like the world would want us to do in that situation!

So today, take a page from the Eli songbook and if you find someone challenging on you something in your life just admit it.  When they come back and call you a hypocrite just smile and say "Yes.  Yes I am."  Then explain to them about Jesus and why your hypocrisy is nothing even though the world wants those who don't believe in Christ to think it's everything.
