I'm thinking about going into youth ministry...

I'm looking at possibly becoming a youth minister.

The problem is, the college that I'm planning on going to doesn't offer youth ministry as a major.

What is a good major for someone going into youth ministry?

I was thinking something versatile, in case I discover that youth ministry isn't for me. Maybe along the lines of sociology?

Any suggestions?

Hey,

If I was you, I wouldn't worry about finding a major for Youth Ministry. If you want to become a Youth Minister your 100% priority whould be finding an existing Youth Minister (someone 10+ years older than you and of the same gender) and follow them. Ask if they will give you opportunities to serve, ask them to mentor you, disciple you and train you in youth ministry. Do that faithfully for 2+ years.

Then alongside that vital relationship and extensive training and opportunity actually serving in ministry, go to College and study Theology or Ministry or even Sociology if you want.

Your first priority should be YOU AS A PERSON becoming a Youth Minister, once you're heading down that track, you can also study it academically.

I was in youth ministry for a long time. Study what you want. Just get all the Bible in you that you can. The only thing that will prepare you for ministry is God. He will use what you have in you do do His work. So, yes learn all you can, but depend on Him.

Hey, I know I too need to act on my passions. the original asking person might already be in some ministies I don't know , all I know is I am writing in here for the first time and currently work UPS warehouse work. I used to work at a greenhouse and help out with junior high youthgroup for two years+ . the original leader was fun to work with and I knew I was growing and that the group was ... learning... growing ... working in the spirit. Personally I am not sure what I want to do with youth. All that I know that I enjoy working with youth. I would like to learn at bible college again I know that one leader was talking about child psycology as a useful tool to be able to care for children in desperate need. That is why the church I grew up in trusted the other leader as 'the' leader because of the trusting of the children to be safe in all troubles to be able to have a network to depend on. I am still working out some of my own personal issues at this time as the Lord leads
