Gifts of the Spirit
Asked by: Nina Foster on February 23, 2008 at 1:12AM EST

Unless I'm misunderstanding what the Bible says, not every believer will speak in tongues and there are different kinds of tongues (prayer, praise, prophesy). Also it is to be done with order and the person speaking in tongues doesn't give the interpretation.

Am I not getting it??? If I'm not then do you know a good website where I can learn more about it?

speaking in tongues is for every beliver, but it is to be done w/order corporately. don't know if there's a web site, but prayer praise and prophesy are not different tongues, they are gifts. . .where does it say that about prayer praise and tongues?

Acts 10:46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.

1cor 14:28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.

But I asked the question because I have questions about it.

But if it is for every neliever why does it say

1Cr 12:30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
& 1 Cor 14:5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.?

that's speaking corporately, not individually!

I guess I'm not understanding your question but I'm not looking for an argument just some help in understanding.

sorry, i'm not trying to argue, just came out that way. when paul said those things he meant not all will speak corporately in worship service, wasn't talking about individual prayer life.

There are a minority of Christians who believe that all believers who receive the Holy Spirit will speak in tongues, and in fact speaking in tongues is the "proof" that a person has the Holy Spirit within. I don't see this view supported in Scripture.

There are others who claim that speaking in tongues and other miracles of the New Testament were only for those days and not for the current time. Although God moves in different ways in different times, I don't see anything in Scripture that indicates that miracles and speaking in tongues were only meant to be temporary. But then, most New Testament writers thought the world itself was not going to last much longer.

In I Corinthians 14, Paul speaks of speaking in tongues as part of personal prayer. He also speaks of it as something done corporately, with interpretation. And other places there are mentions of various gifts, speaking in tongues being one of them, but in those places there is no definition of those tongues, although probably the implication, since it's a gift, is the corporate kind. In Acts, when people received the Holy Spirit, it seems they usually spoke in tongues, but there is no mention of this being expected as a requirement or proof.

That all is the long answer to your question. The short answer is, I think your interpretation is pretty much correct. I think God would give to anyone who wanted the gift of speaking in tongues for private prayer, but I think God would be selective in who he gave the gift to for corporate use.

Every believer can speak in tongues for private prayer if they ask and desire it, but not all are given tongues for use corporately w/interpretations. But every instance of filling of Holy Spirit there is initial evidence of speaking in tongues. Christians that do not speak in tongues have the Holy Spirit, but not the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Tongues ALWAYS comes w/the baptism.

friends of ours wrote a book about this called The Blessing, by Wayde and Rosalyn Goodall. It's very good.
