Music expresses the thoughts and feelings otherwise difficult to articulate. Perhaps this is why people so easily find comfort in the lyrics of songs, identifying with the musicians own experiences. Standard Publishing’s newest title releasing in September, Between the Lines and Spaces, explores those experiences -- the stories behind the songs of Christian Artists.
Author Barton Green weaves the poetry of the artists’ lyrics throughout the prose account of each song’s birth, creating a rare connection between the composer, their music, and the reader. For example, “Just Another Day”, tells the story behind the song “Last Day on Earth” written by Steven Curtis Chapman. Watching a funeral procession drive by and wondering how the deceased had spent his last day, brings back the memories of Steven’s own grandfather. This encounter led to the lyrics,
If this should be the last day that I have
Before I breathe the air of heaven
Let me live it with abandon…
Each chapter ends with an introspective prayer and Scripture verse to help readers personally reflect on the lyrics and apply the message behind the song to their own lives.
Between the Lines and Spaces features stories from over 15 other artists including Russ Taff, Matthew West, Susan Ashton, David Phelps, Mike Weaver (Big Daddy Weave), and Jason Roy (Building 429).
“The lyrics found in these pages are chosen from among the most intuitive compositions of our time. Taken as a whole, each song is moving, amazing. But between the lines and spaces of the music, many facets of truth can be found. Pull back the layers and you will find parallel tales, behind-the-scenes epochs, and intimate vignettes from the composers themselves.”
