Barry French was raised in a small town, nestled away in the shadows of the Appalachian Mountains. He always enjoys telling people that he is from London. It only takes a moment for the look of confusion to appear on their faces before they remark about his lack of a British accent. To which he responds with “Kentucky… I’m from London, Kentucky.” Their confusion fades and they both share a good laugh. Whether it be through a quick laugh, storytelling, or just lending an ear to listen, he has always loved being able to leave an impression on someone’s life. And he has found that one of the best ways he can do that is through music.
He began his musical journey as a drummer, playing every Sunday at his local church. Soon after that, he learned the guitar and a whole new world opened up to him: the world of songwriting. While his musical influences are about as wide as the mountain range he grew up in, his first love is for rock. You’re just as likely to catch him listening to Frank Sinatra as you are Joe Satriani or the Foo Fighters, but when it comes to writing, Frank is nowhere to be found amongst the backdrop of guitars and drums. Whether the song features a crushing guitar riff or pulsating drums, the one thing that he keeps constant is the sense of purpose in the melody.
As a songwriter, there are not too many feelings in this world as great as the one you get when someone listens to your song and connects with it. It’s always a great feeling. But it’s even more special when that someone is another artist. In this case, the artist is Eowyn. Her third album, Silent Screams (March 2008 release), produced by Travis Wyrick (POD, Disciple, Pillar, etc…) contains 4 tracks that he co-wrote with her, including the title track.
Whether it’s writing songs with another artist or trying to convey emotions from deep within inside him, the purpose remains the same: leave an impression on the audience.
